FAQs

What is Tallow?

Tallow is rendered, or heat processed beef fat. Rendering involves cooking down the fat until it is liquified. Once the liquid cools, it hardens, making it shelf stable. Our tallow balm is hand rendered in small batches and has not been bleached, deodorized, hydrogenated, degraded or altered.

The most nutritious tallow will come from the fat surrounding the kidneys, called suet. Furthermore, suet from a grass-fed, grass-finished cattle, have been found to have more omega 3s, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Pure Mezcla is dedicated to always sourcing grass-fed, grass-finished suet.

Our ancestors knew how nourishing tallow can be and made sure that the young, the old, and the child-bearing were nourished with it. It was greatly prized for its nutritional benefits on fertility, longevity, teeth and skin health. Tallow has been used in cooking, making soaps, candles, as a healing skin balm as well as a lubricant for wood, leather and metal working industries. Many old cookbooks from the 1800s and 1900s, will have tallow as one of their ingredients. Unfortunately, in the 1950s, people were steered away from saturated fats and tallow was replaced with industrially produced oils.

How can tallow benefit my skin?

As stated above, tallow is great for skin health and has been used for many years. Not only is it a great all over moisturizer, it can be used for a multitude of skin conditions including but not limited to dry skin, sun burns, chapped lips, eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap, diaper rashes, minor wounds, scratches and many others.

Although tallow may seem greasy at first, it is completely breathable and will eventually penetrate deep into the skin, leaving you hydrated. Tallow is a wonderful addition to your skincare routine, as it can be used all over your body to treat dry and irritated skin.

Tallow is full of fatty acids such as palmitoleic, palmitic, and stearic acids which are nearly identical to our skin’s sebum. Sebum is what is secreted to moisturize our skin. Interestingly enough, the word “sebum” means tallow in Latin.

What does grass-fed and grass-finished mean?

Grass-finished beef comes from cattle that ate nothing but grass and forage for their entire lives. Grassfed, on the other hand, may be used to label meat from cattle that were started on a grass diet but have either received supplemental grain feed or are finished on a fully grain-based diet.

Research has shown that feeding the cattle grain for just under three months caused the destruction of the omega-3 content and decreased the CLA content of the beef. The longer the animals were fed grains, the lower the quality of the meat/ fat.

What is the shelf life of your products?

The shelf life of our tallow balms is 9 months but may be extended if properly stored or refrigerated.

No, refrigeration is not required unless you would like to extend the shelf life. We recommend you store your tallow in a cool, dark and dry place (bathrooms hold a lot of moisture). Tallow is very much like coconut oil; it will be harder in winter, and softer in summer since it is pure and has no emulsifying agent.

Reishi Tincture shelf life is about 1 year.

Are your tallow balm safe during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and babies?

Our tallow balms are made from naturally derived ingredients. As with anything natural, we recommend you first do a patch test to determine if there are any unknown allergies.
